11) Mad Mel: Mel Gibson

For years, Gibson was a very popular actor, a fan favorite who starred in a number of hits, including “Mad Max,” “Lethal Weapon,” and “Braveheart.” The characters he played were typically a little bit crazy, a little on the edge — and now we know why. Gibson wasn’t acting. He was pretty much just being himself — intense, angry and volatile.

The truth was slow to leak to the general public, but once it did it spilled out like lava from a spewing volcano. Many believe that Gibson’s wife, Robyn, had been protecting him for many years and once they separated, the true Mel was allowed to surface.

The first incident that brought out the true Mel occurred in 2006 when the actor was arrested for DUI and the arrest report was leaked to the press. The report revealed several things, including the fact that Gibson was upset because his wife was leaving him and that he made derogatory remarks about Jews during his arrest. Gibson managed to smooth that one over. But then in 2010, tapes were leaked of heated telephone conversations between Gibson and his then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. In the tapes, Gibson uses a number of racial slurs and also admits to hitting Oksana. The actor’s popularity plummeted almost overnight and hasn’t truly recovered since that time.
