22 Of Hollywood’s Happiest Celebrity Couples
21. Meryl Streep and Don Gummer
Meryl Streep rose to fame after co-starring in the 1978 film “The Deer Hunter.” That same year, her fiancĂ©, actor John Cazale, died of bone cancer.
After his death, she was forced to leave their apartment. With nowhere to go, she was offered a place to stay by her brother’s good friend, sculptor Don Gummer, who was heading out to travel abroad.
Streep and Gummer stayed in contact by mail during his travels.
When Gummer returned from his long absence, Streep ended up staying, and they married six months later, on September 30, 1978.
Thirty six years and four children later, Streep told “Good Housekeeping” that Gummer saved her life. “I don’t know what I’d do without my husband. I’d be dead, emotionally at least, if I hadn’t met him.”
Compared to Streep, who has three Oscars, two Emmys, eight Golden Globes, two BAFTAs and three SAG awards under her belt, Gummer is relatively unknown, although his MFA from Yale and his talent as a sculptor has made him famous in his own right in certain art circles.
Asked by a reporter from the “New York Daily News” if he ever gets sick of being second fiddle to his incredibly famous wife, Gummer replied, “Not sick, I just don’t get excited.” According to him, life with Streep is as normal as it can be, including bickering about who’s going to do the dishes.
