The American Idol runner up had been dodging gay rumors since his first appearance on the show. We can understand his apprehensiveness on coming out when he was a fresh faced, bespectacled, nerdy singer with a powerful voice on the reality show. When breaking into the business, it can be hard to know what to reveal about your personal life in fear of making the wrong move.
Clay was also trying to appeal to a female, nerdy-guy-loving audience during his time on the show so it makes sense that he would keep his private life to himself at the time. But finally after several years of speculation the former reality star, turned successful singer and Broadway star came out. He revealed in an interview with People magazine that he was a new dad and a gay dad at that. The performer also revealed that the decision to come out was the first one he made as a father. He had revealed to his family that he was gay 4 years prior and wanted to keep the ball rolling revealing the fact to others close to him, although we’re sure many already knew.
