Branagh was married to the brilliant actress Emma Thompson when he began an affair while directing and starring alongside actress Helena Bonham-Carter in the film Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

The affair shocked Hollywood as well as London. Branagh and Thompson had been an artistic power couple, both immensely respected as fine actors–not your garden variety Hollywood types. Brainy or no, sex happens and so does unbridled sexual attraction.

Branagh’s affair with Bonham-Carter ended his marriage to Thompson. Branagh continued to carry on with Bonham-Carter for a few more years before that fizzled out. He wound up marrying an art director and Bonham-Carter entered into a long-term relationship with director Tim Burton. Thompson also married again and has a daughter and adopted son.

It’s unfortunate that Branagh and Thompson split; if you get the chance, see the film “Much Ado about Nothing” or “Dead Again.” Their on-screen chemistry is so apparent, so natural. Perhaps it was their hectic and conflicting schedules. Or, perhaps marriage really is an antiquated notion. Or, perhaps some people simply fail miserably at keeping their vows. Who knows.

In a recent interview, Thompson stated that she doesn’t hold a grudge against Bonham-Carter. We always believe Hollywood actors and actresses when they say stuff like that, don’t we?
