8) From Tweener to Twerker: Miley Cyrus

It was the “twerk” heard around the world. When Miley Cyrus hit the stage at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and infamously twerked on Robin Thicke, it was like she was throwing a big middle finger at the tweens and their parents who had fallen in love with her. The 20-year-old singer — dressed basically in a bra and underwear and with her hair in two strange knots atop her head — pranced around with huge stuffed animals, twerked and straddled a large foam finger.

Although her performance at the VMAs was shocking to some, it was also not surprising. Cyrus had been pushing the envelope in many ways in the months leading up to the VMAs. In December 2010, a video leaked that showed the singer smoking a bong. In 2012, she began rocking sexier outfits and then suddenly lopped off her hair into an edgy punk look. But the VMA routine was relatively tame compared to some of her performances during her 2014 Bangerz tour, where she sometimes simulated masturbation or smoked pot while on stage.

Although, many people believe that Cyrus is just being controversial for the publicity, Radar Online recently quoted a licensed counselor who believes Cyrus’s overtly sexual behavior and drug use may be signs she is suffering from a mood or a personality disorder.
