13) The Death of a Child: Rebecca Gayheart

The stunning actress and model, best known for her role on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” was driving her Jeep Grand Cherokee around 3 p.m. when she tragically struck and killed a third grader as he walked across the street. Gayheart, who was 29 at the time, was allegedly going 40 miles or more in a 25-mph speed limit zone and passed several cars that had stopped to let the little boy cross the street. The lawyer for the parents of the boy claims Gayheart was on her cellphone, but her side denied the allegation.

Because Gayheart was not drunk or on drugs at the time of the accident, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office only charged her with misdemeanor manslaughter. The actress, who was said to have been very distraught after the accident, paid for the 9-year-old boy’s hospitalization and funeral. As for her sentencing, she was put on three years’ probation, had her license suspended for a year and ordered to pay a $2,800 fine. The boy’s parents also filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the actress, which was settled confidentially in 2002.
