7) Fear Made Him Do It: Keith Moon

For years, The Who drummer Keith Moon was the epitome of rock star excess. He was famous for his reckless and wild lifestyle and is considered by many to have been one of the best — if not the best — drummer in rock-and-roll history. He was also infamous for trashing his drum kits at the end of concerts and wreaking havoc on hotel rooms around the world. Moon’s bigger-than-life personality earned him the nickname, Moon the Loon.

In 1970, Moon was leaving a bar when a group of skinheads attacked the chauffeur-driven Bentley that Moon, his wife and friends were in. As the mob threw stones and other things at the car and tried to overturn it, the chauffeur, Cornelius Boland, 24, was either dragged from the vehicle or got out. Moon, not surprisingly panicked and tried to drive the car away. Tragically, Boland was either pushed or fell under the moving car and was killed.

Moon eventually pled guilty to drunk driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance. However, the judge in the case cleared Moon of all of the charges, remarking, “You had no choice but to act the way you did and no moral culpability is attached to you.”
