There are all kinds of reports on the cause of the scar on Joaquin Phoenix’s upper lip, but all of them are quite different from one another.
If we are to believe Phoenix’s vague account, the situation actually goes back when he was still in the mother’s womb and the scar apparently hasn’t been caused by some physical force while he was a kid, as many people initially thought.
According to Joaquin, his mother experienced a sharp pain while pregnant and he was consequently born with the now famous mark on his upper lip. Other report’s and sources attribute the scar to a “microform” or “microcleft,” the least severe form of a cleft palate.
Whatever the case is, the actor’s unique look has landed him many a prominent role in his career. Go, imperfections!
