Julia Roberts is notoriously tight-lipped about her love life, to the point of staging a secret July fourth wedding in 2002 on Roberts’ New Mexico Ranch.

Guests were invited to celebrate Independence Day and were met at midnight by the surprise wedding which included a fireworks show, but no further bells nor whistles.

The two met when Roberts was shooting The Mexican in 2000. Moder was a cameraman and, at the time, married to makeup artists Vera Steimberg.

Though sources say that union was already fraught, there can be now doubt that Moder’s growing connection to Roberts contributed to the divorce (officially filed in June 2000).

Two months before their wedding, the couples got matching tattoos; each others’ initials on their lower backs.

Roberts involved favorite makeup artist Genevieve Herr and hairdresser Serge Normant in her ploy by claiming she needed them for a photo-shoot. Perhaps it was the photo-shoot of a lifetime!
