22 Of Hollywood’s Happiest Celebrity Couples
17. Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols
Diane Sawyer, ABC World News anchor and former “Good Morning, America” co-anchor, met comedy legend Mike Nichols in 1986 in a waiting room in a Paris airport.
“When I first met my wife,” Nichols recalls, “I thought, nobody can be that perfect. But she was.”
Nichols, the director and producer who made such movies as “The Graduate” and “The Birdcage,” had been married three times previously, and Sawyer, who had never been married, tied the knot in 1988. Nichols brought three children into the marriage.
Their secret to a happy 26-year marriage? According to an interview with “Ladies’ Home Journal,” they hold hands a lot and rarely fight. When they do fight, they’re able to see humor in the situation.
“I remember once when we were arguing, he stopped in the middle of it and said, ‘Well, this is sort of fun, too.’ And it was! It was good to know that we could get out our strong feelings but that we were indestructible at the same time.”
The adoring Nichols tries hard to keep the romance alive. “Mike is much more romantic than I am,” Sawyer admitted. “He puts little notes in my sock drawer or in my suitcase before I leave for a work trip.”
