22 Of Hollywood’s Happiest Celebrity Couples
22. Dustin Hoffman and Lisa Gottsegen
Dustin Hoffman, whose first film role was the iconic Ben Braddock in Mike Nichols’ 1967 masterpiece “The Graduate,” captured the hearts of Americans in box office hits like “Rain Man” and “Tootsie.”
The first time Hoffman met his future wife Lisa Gottsegen, she was still in the womb.
Hoffman’s mother and Gottsegen’s grandmother were good friends, and when Hoffman was 16, he played the piano for Gottsegen’s parents’ wedding while her mother was pregnant with her.
Eleven years later, when Hoffman was 27 and Gottsegen was 10, they met again at a family barbecue. Hoffman played the piano for her while she danced, and after the party, Gottsegen told her grandmother, “When I grow up, I’m going to marry him.”
Fast forward twelve years later. Gottsegen was 22 and entering law school, and Hoffman was pushing 40 when they began dating. They married in October of 1980.
Gottsegen often accompanied Hoffman while he worked on location, which she says kept the marriage strong and their relationship friendly. Hoffman told Reader’s Digest that love is still the driving force behind their successful marriage. “If you’re both working to be honest, the marriage gets better and better. Love becomes deeper.”
The couple has four children and two grand children.
