René Angélil, Celine Dion’s Husband, Dies in Las Vegas
René Angélil, Montreal-born husband and manager of songstress Celine Dion, died on Thursday after a long battle with throat cancer in their home in suburban Las Vegas, Nevada.
A post on Celine Dion’s Facebook page read as follows:
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that René Angélil, aged 73, died this morning at his residence in Las Vegas after a long and courageous fight against cancer. The family wishes to live the mourning in privacy.”
Angélil met Dion when she was 12 years old after her mother sent him an audio tape of the songstress.
“At that time I had been in the business for 20 years. In those 20 years, I had never heard or had a feeling come out of someone like this little girl I had in front of me. I had shivers all over, you know.”
Angélil eventually mortgaged his house to finance Dion’s first album. He’s managed her career her entire life and has become the love of her life in the process.
The couple married in 1994, and went on to have three children together.
